Task mining

What is task mining?

Task mining records what people do on their computers, such as clicks, keystrokes and data entry, and analyzes it to show how tasks are really done, including the work between the steps that business systems log.

Why it matters

Much of the effort in a process happens outside systems of record, in email, spreadsheets and copy-and-paste work that process mining can’t see. Task mining makes that work visible. It shows what people do but not why, and because it records their screens, people should agree to it before it is switched on.

Example

A finance team records how invoices are handled for two weeks and finds that each one is copied by hand between three apps before anyone checks it.
