Stop rule

What is a stop rule?

A stop rule is a limit that ends an AI agent’s run or pauses it for a person, such as a maximum time, number of steps or spend, or a condition such as two figures that disagree.

Also called: Stopping condition

Why it matters

An agent that runs without a person watching can loop, retry or drift. Stop rules cap the cost of a bad run and make the agent ask instead of guess.

Example

A reporting agent stops after 45 minutes or $5 of model use, whichever comes first, and stops to ask the lead whenever two sources disagree.
