Event log

What is an event log?

An event log is the record a business system keeps of what happened to each case: which activity took place, and usually when and by whom. It is the raw material for process mining.

Why it matters

Event logs show how often each path, loop and wait really occurs, which interviews alone can’t measure. They hold only what a system was set up to record, so work done in email, spreadsheets or chat leaves no trace in them.

Example

A CRM records every change to a quote’s status with a timestamp and the user who made it, so a team can count how often quotes go back for a second approval.
