Ambient agent

What is an ambient agent?

An ambient agent is an AI agent that listens to a stream of events, such as incoming emails, and acts on them without waiting for a prompt, involving a person only when it needs to. It is LangChain’s name for a kind of background agent.

Why it matters

Ambient agents save people’s attention. They handle events as they arrive and bring a person in only to notify them, ask them a question or have them review an action.

Example

An email agent sorts each new message as it arrives, drafts replies to routine ones for approval, and flags a contract that needs a signature it can’t give.
