Agent trace

What is an agent trace?

An agent trace is the step-by-step record of one AI agent run: what came in, what the agent saw, each model call and tool call it made, what it produced, what it cost, how long it took, what failed and where a person stepped in.

Also called: Trace, Transcript, Trajectory

Why it matters

Agents act over many steps, so a good-looking result can hide a bad step. The trace is how you find the step that went wrong, measure quality and cost, and build the audit trail.

Example

A deal desk agent’s trace shows the request it read, the pricing policy it applied, the CRM records it pulled, the summary it drafted and the approver’s edits.
