SOP (standard operating procedure)
What is an SOP?
An SOP, or standard operating procedure, is a written, step-by-step description of how a task should be done.
Also called: Standard operating procedure
Why it matters
Most SOPs drift out of date and leave out the exceptions, so the documented process and the real one differ. An SOP written from how the work actually runs, and kept current, is useful to both people and agents.
Example
An SOP for the weekly revenue review lists the sources, the order of the steps, the 11:00 deadline, and what to do when renewals arrive late.
