Process mapping

What is process mapping?

Process mapping is the work of recording how a workflow runs, step by step: who does each step, in which system, what they decide, and where the work waits, loops back or changes hands.

Also called: Process map, As-is process map

Why it matters

A map drawn from the SOP shows how work is supposed to run. A map built to decide where AI belongs has to show how it really runs, from people, systems and documents, in enough detail to sort every step into delete, plain code, agent or human.

Example

A team’s SOP for its weekly revenue review lists five steps. Mapping four real Mondays finds 20, spread across five apps, including a wait on Finance and four steps that redo earlier work.
