Agentic workflow

What is an agentic workflow?

An agentic workflow is a workflow in which some steps are handled by AI agents that make judgment calls, alongside steps run by plain code and decisions kept with people.

Why it matters

Calling a whole workflow “agentic” hides the design choice that matters: which steps actually need judgment. In well-built systems, agents handle only a few steps and plain code does most of the rest.

Example

In a quote-to-cash workflow, building the quote may be agentic, sending it is plain code, and approving the discount stays with a person.
