Open-weight model

What is an open-weight model?

An open-weight model is an AI model whose trained weights are published, so you can run it on your own infrastructure or through a provider of your choice.

Why it matters

Open-weight models can cost far less per token and keep data inside your network, but running them adds servers, GPUs and people. Some enterprises also restrict which models they may use, for example by country of origin.

Example

A company runs an open-weight model in its own cloud account to summarize meeting transcripts, so transcripts never leave its network.
